Question date: 09/13/2010RE: Michael Beckwith's social justice vision and it's relevance to our lives.
Some of his views come from his history as a member of a group that has suffered socially and also from his background in a church that had a history of social justice as a priority. His race-consciousness is still much more connected to a community or tribal-type consciousness than the more highly individualized consciousness of the western European. And so it could be summed up as the difference between the question, "What's in it for me?" and "What's in it for us?". No person in their right mind would want anything but justice and equal opportunity for all people, but there is a fine line between treating people like victims and empowering them. Michael Beckwith's commitment and vision is an empowering one and having the ability to empower others is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding ways to live. There will never be satisfaction in not making some use of your life. That doesn't mean it has to be social justice or anything in particular, but having recognized who you truly are and what you have to give, it would be frustrating and disconnecting to not be able to express that. You are learning now that it isn't what you can get from spirituality, it is what you can give that will make you most happy. Of course, all that arises from inspiration and there is no need to adopt anybody else's idea of what is fulfilling. You will find what works for you.

Question date: 12/08/2011 Am I on the right path? I love to fully immerse myself in my spiritual life. As a way of expressing it to others, I am absorbed in writing and publicly reading poems about that life. There is very little I care about doing except to meditate or be quiet with myself, write poems and sometimes letters, and talk at length with friends about these things. But there are also many types of work and entertainment which I used to do, but am not interested in any longer. These are mostly engaging with family on various projects that range from maintaining property to watching movies to caring for my somewhat disabled brother. Maybe I was only pretending to be interested in such matters, or perhaps the scope of my attention has narrowed a great deal. At any rate, I feel guilty that I have lost interest in activities that are still a focus for people I love and who love me. I want to move forward to a life of meditation and poetry and talk, but feel I need to better express my directio n to my loved ones, so that they might better understand and help me achieve my wishes and needs, while I can still help them achieve theirs. Am I on the right path?
